STUDIOS AT MASS MoCA
Frequently Asked Questions

About Us

What is MASS MoCA?

MASS MoCA – the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art – is one of the world's largest centers for making and showing the best art of our time. Located on a 16-acre campus in North Adams, MA, it encompasses a vast complex of 19th-century factory buildings and occupies nearly one-third of the city's downtown business district.

What is Assets for Artists?

MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists program is a professional development program for artists that provides residencies and other services aimed at helping artists sustain a lifetime of creative work. We have many years of experience providing financial and business tools for artists in all disciplines, including optional one-on-one coaching for artists-in-residence at MASS MoCA. Assets for Artists runs the Studios at MASS MoCA.

How is Assets for Artists affiliated with MASS MoCA?

Assets for Artists is a program of MASS MoCA. The Assets for Artists program is also supported by other key partners including the Midas Collaborative and ArtBuilt, and funders such as the Barr Foundation, the Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

What’s the mission of the Studios at MASS MoCA?

This residency program is intended to embolden artists and foster the creative revitalization of North Adams.

How do I apply for the other programs available through Assets for Artists?

Our application dates, deadlines, and qualifications vary for our programs. Please note that our non-residency programs specifically serve artists living in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. You may visit our Workshops or Capacity-Building pages to see what we’re currently offering and how to get involved.

What professional development services will be provided during my residency?

Artists-in-residence have the option to participate in artist-focused financial and business workshops through MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists program (www.assetsforartists.org). You will receive priority consideration for available workshops (subject to space constraints) for 1 year of your residency.

APPLYING TO THE STUDIOS

How and when do I apply?

Artists are invited to apply through Assets for Artists’ Submittable page. Calls for applications are made four times a year. You can join our mailing list to be kept up-to-date when our next application round opens. The application is free to apply. Check out our APPLYING page for more details. Due to the volume of submissions close to the deadline, please consider submitting your application early to take into account any technical difficulties that may happen. We do not extend the deadline for late submissions.

Preview the application questions here.

What disciplines do you host at the Studios?

We welcome applications from artists at all career stages, income levels, and geographic locations. We primarily seek applications from visual artists (painters, sculptors, installation artists, photographers, video/new media artists, fiber artists, printmakers, etc.) and writers in all literary disciplines. We discourage applications from dancers, musicians, and other performers because our studios are only well suited for artists who work quietly (nothing is sound-proofed) and who don't require space for rehearsal / movement arts. Groups/collectives may apply to work on joint projects in the visual and literary arts. The studios have light-duty ventilation, so an art practice generating strong fumes cannot be accommodated.

Can I apply with a collaborator?

Absolutely. If you are selected you would share one of our larger studios but be assigned your own room in the apartments unless you specify otherwise. Under "Artistic Information" and “Residency Goals" on your application, please make it very clear that you are applying to come as a collaborative duo. You may use one of your names as the contact applicant but please provide both your CVs or a joint CV and work samples relevant to your collaborative work. This can be compiled into one PDF so that you don't have trouble with attaching multiple files.

Do you accept international applicants?

Yes! We welcome artists from all over the world to the Studios. If you intend to apply to your local or national arts agency for travel funding, we might recommend you consider applying to our Early Application deadline (which we offer during each open application period). The Early Application allows you to apply and receive notice a full season ahead than the regular application (e.g. if it’s our open call for Spring/Summer 2020, you can apply for Fall/Winter 2020 and receive notice at the same time as the Spring/Summer applicants). Artists applying with this application will NOT be considered for MASS MoCA's financial aid, so you should only use this particular application if you need the longer lead time to position yourself for other institutional support to fund your residency. The Early Application is always a separate form on our Submittable page.

How are artists-in-residence selected?

Submissions are reviewed by a diverse, rotating jury. Scoring is based on the quality of work as well as the compellingness of the proposed project to be worked on while in residence. Recently, the Studios has added to a new component to our selection rubric that takes equity factors in considerations in order to better support those marginalized within arts institutions/ opportunities. Within the application, artists have the option to describe any barriers they’d like the jurors to take into consideration. This may include considerations of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, status as a care-giver, veteran, immigration status, financial needs. We recognize that racism and racial inequality pervade the cultural sector, our community in the Northern Berkshires, and the world at large. If you have any questions about how we can best support you during your stay, please reach out. Learn about how the Assets for Artists’ department is endeavoring to work within an anti-oppression framework.

The jury changes each year, so if you are not selected we welcome you to reapply. We do, however, recommend that you include some newer work, so that we know you’ve been in the studio since we last saw you!

My work sample will be primarily videos. How do I submit these?

In the work sample file section of the application, we recommend you upload a document that includes URL links to you videos (don’t forget to include the passwords if the videos are password protected). You should also include in this document your list of works, so the jury knows how to identify each linked work.

When and how will I hear if I was awarded a residency?

Because of the volume of applications we receive and the rigorous review process that ensures work is seen by multiple panelists, it often takes us up to 3 months to notify artists if they have received a residency. If 3 months pass and you still haven’t heard from us, it probably means we’re late (but trying hard to get letters out!), but if you’re worried, you can always check your Submittable account to see if any messages were sent through the platform and make sure emails from Submittable don’t get sent to your junk mail.

You will be notified through Submittable if you are awarded a residency, so be sure that your Submittable notifications are set up to send you an email when a new message comes through the platform (don’t worry - this is Submittable’s default!). If you registered your Submittable with an email you don’t really use any more, we recommend you update your contact information in your account so that you receive your letter when we send it out.

I was waitlisted for this residency season. Now what?

Congrats! That means the jury really liked your work. We offer residencies for those on the wait list if an artist drops out unexpectedly or is unable to attend. It's totally possible that a spot will open up, but it's quite hard to predict. If a space appears during dates that you listed as being available, you may get lucky! We will contact you directly if a spot opens. If this doesn't work out, it still means that the selection panel liked your work, and, while we can't guarantee your acceptance next round, they will take notice if you apply again, especially if you've completed new work in that time.

Can I get feedback about my application before or after panel review?

We receive hundreds and hundreds of applications each application cycle. Due to this volume and limited staff capacity, we are unable to provide you advice on your application materials before or after panel review. We are happy to answer specific residency-related questions that you might still have after reading these questions, though. You can contact us at studios@massmoca.org.

Can I reapply as a Studios at MASS MoCA alumni?

If you’re a Studios at MASS MoCA alum, we’re happy to have you back! Each application cycle, we have a special, simplified application for you to tell us briefly what you’ve been up to since your first residency. With this application you’re only competing against fellow alumni, so while not as competitive as our general application, we only reserve a few alumni spots each season and acceptance is not guaranteed. Alumni are not eligible for residency fellowships or our reduced financial aid and instead pay a standard alumni rate of $400/wk for residencies of 4+ weeks, $430/wk for a 3-week residency, and $450/wk for a 2-week residency. (Note students who have attended a workshop-in-residence are not considered eligible alumni for this opportunity) Alumni apps follow the Regular Application timeline.

Payment/ FINANCIAL AID / RESIDENCY FEES

How much does the residency program cost, and is there financial aid?

Over the past several years, there are a very small percentage of artists who are paying the full residency fee, $650 per person per week is the maximum fee charged to attend the residency program. Most artists receive partial or full financial aid. Our financial aid budget allows us to support the majority of participants with some level of financial aid; the amount of aid reflects a combination of financial need and the artistic merit of the application (as judged by our selection committees).

We currently have lots of different types full fellowships, typically with specific qualifications designated by a particular donor, so please make sure you qualify if you are trying to be considered for any of the fellowships.

Your financial aid package and residency fees will be summarized in your award letter when you are accepted.

If I have to pay a fee, when are residency fees due?

50% of the residency fee is due upon acceptance into the program (submitted with a signed residency contract) to secure your slot. This first payment is non-refundable. The balance of the residency fee is due upon arrival at MASS MoCA.

What happens if MASS MoCA cancels my residency?

In the highly unlikely event that the Studios at MASS MoCA has to cancel your residency, your residency fee payment will be refunded in full.

TRAVELING TO/FROM MASS MoCA

Check out our Preparing for your Residency Guidebook for more details.

When should I arrive for my residency?

Check-in is between 3PM and 5PM the day of your arrival. We recommend that you arrive to town either during that window or a little earlier to enjoy the museum free of charge before the check-in window opens. To best plan your arrival for this check-in window, see details for travel below. If you need to arrive a day earlier, we are happy to recommend local hotels or AirBnBs.

What are my options for traveling to North Adams?

Like most rural places, it can be difficult to get to North Adams with out a car. However it can be done! The nearest airport is Albany, NY (1 hour drive away). Other nearby airports are Hartford, CT (2 hrs away) or Boston (2.5 hrs away). There is Amtrak and Bus service to Pittsfield (1/2 hr away) from Boston and NYC. From there you can take a cab to North Adams. Travel guidance for arrival by car is available here.

We will be happy to provide you detailed information about transit and taxi options after your acceptance as you plan your arrival.

FACILITIES AND HOUSING

For full details on our studio and housing spaces, visit our Facilities Page.

What is provided during my residency stay?

Residents will receive 24-hour access to private studio space on the MASS MoCA campus, plus lodging in newly renovated furnished apartments across the street from the museum, right in the downtown. Learn more about our facilities here.

Residents will also receive the benefits of “temporary membership” during their stay at MASS MoCA: access to the galleries during regular museum hours; invitations to member openings; member discounts on performing arts events; and member discounts at the museum store.

The residency fee will include one group lunch per day at the museum cafe.

What materials does the residency provide?

We provide a minimally furnished studio (including a work table and chair) for each participant. Easels, additional worktable space, or alternative seating, can likely be provided, but you should consider bringing the essentials to meet the needs of your practice. If you have special pieces of furniture or equipment you would like to request, please let us know and we may be able to help out! Although we cannot guarantee special requests, we’ll do our best to help you find the proper equipment you’ll need for your time here.

All art materials and most equipment must be provided by the participant.

We have a roller etching press and a hydraulic flatbed press that may be used for a variety of printmaking techniques (but nothing using acid). We also have a 45-inch Herald floor loom and a 22-inch Harrisville floor loom (looms must be requested/reserved in advance to be sure that one will be available during your residency).

Do you have a wood shop / kiln / pot shop / glass blowing studio / metalworking shop?

Unfortunately, we do not have any of these facilities. Power tools are not permitted in the studios due to sound.

What does the studio space or apartments look like?

For full details on our studio and housing spaces, visit our Facilities Page.

Is there laundry in my apartment?

Yes. There is a washing machine and dryer in each apartment.

YOUR RESIDENCY IN NORTH ADAMS

Check out the Studios at MASS MoCA Entertainment, Restaurants and Local Services Guidebook for more information.

What is there to do in North Adams?

With such institutions as the Williams College Museum of Art, the Clark Art Institute, and, of course, MASS MoCA in close range, there’s no shortage of events. The Berkshires offer a plethora of outdoor activities available year-round.

And if you are coming in the summer, you can also take advantage of world-class music, theater, and dance at Tanglewood, Williamstown Theater Festival, Barrington Stage, Berkshire Theatre Group, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance.

Will I have cell phone service?

Yes! Probably. We have widespread coverage in our area by most carriers. However, we must warn you that T-Mobile has a notorious dead zone in North Adams. There is a Verizon store around the corner from your housing where you can purchase a temporary phone.

Where can I buy groceries and other necessities?

Right around the corner from the museum in walking distance is a small shopping center with a Big Y grocery, and Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies. Minutes down the road (by car) are a Stop & Shop supermarket and a local food co-op.

What is the weather like in the Berkshires?

Our weather can get hot and humid in the summer, and it is cold (and often snowy) in the winter. Spring and fall both fluctuate wildly. During the summer, both the studios and apartments will have air conditioning (but if you're here in the warmer months and you generally run hot, you might want to bring a small fan!). During the winter, the weather is hard to predict. Be prepared for some cold nights and t-shirt weather days. And although we heat all of our buildings and provide blankets and comforters, if you run cold, you won't regret bringing along some blankets/sweaters for extra warmth. By November, some winter weather will likely kick in. For late fall and winter residencies, pack a heavy coat, water-resistant outerwear, and some sturdy shoes (hiking boots are always advised considering some of our more popular outdoor attractions)!

Is parking available on campus?

Yes. All residents with cars will be able to park for free in a MASS MoCA-owned lot near the museum.

Can I have mail delivered to me during my residency?

Yes! All mail (including packages via UPS/FedEx) can be sent to:

Your Name
Attn: Studios at MASS MoCA
1320 MASS MoCA Way
North Adams, MA 01247

We ask that you not send packages long in advance of your arrival because we have limited space for safely storing packages.

Should I rent a car for my stay?

Once you get here, North Adams is easily navigable without a car. The studios and apartment are within a 5-minute walk of each other, and also just around the corner from downtown (with many restaurants) and a shopping plaza with pharmacies and a supermarket. If you want to explore nearby towns during your residency, having a rental car could be handy -- but otherwise it isn’t necessary, especially considering that nearby rental car options are limited.

Guest and Pet Policy

Do my temporary museum member privileges apply to guests?

You may welcome guests and visitors to your personal studio space at any time. However, if you receive any visitors during the residency, they have to pay for their own museum admission.

Can I bring my spouse/partner, child/children, or other guests to stay with me during my residency?

Unfortunately, our current housing arrangements do not accommodate additional guests for an extended stay due to space constraints. We often can accommodate a spouse/partner staying for a single night (such as when dropping off or picking up a resident) if you request that in advance so that we can get the pre-approval of other artists staying in that apartment. Please do not assume that you have permission for a guest to stay over. Our policy is to not allow guests except for logistical reasons when it has been pre-approved for a single night.

Some artists have chosen to rent affordable AirBnB apartments in the area for their family/guests. We are happy to provide suggestions.

If my arrival coincides with a welcome dinner, may I invite a spouse/partner who drove with me to attend the dinner?

Please let us know in advance if you would like to have a spouse/partner attend a welcome dinner with you. The cost for a guest is $35 per person, and we can often add your guest to the reservation if space allows.

Can I bring my pet with me to the residency?

No, pets are not allowed in the Studios and residency housing, with the exception of service animals with the appropriate paperwork.
